Botanical Gardens Class

I survived my first time teaching at the Botanical Gardens. The students were so much fun, and the gardens there are amazing! These three stayed behind to help clean up!

It was a late harvest this year because of all the excess water throughout the year. Ron finished up all crops the first week in December.

In the fall Patty Heinz, Debi Masinelli and I had a quilting retreat at the farm. Patty and I worked on a house quilt while Debi put binding on her Christmas tree quilt. Working assembly line style helps complete projects so much quicker. Ron was able to move my ironing board from the wall in his office (formerly my sewing room in the early 80's) to the laundry room to help us work even faster.

Goshen Market a success this year

The 2008 Land of Goshen Community Market was a success this year. Everyone was happy to at least be out of the 3 year drought. Heinz Gardens sold 380 jars of flowers, 104 pounds of rhubarb, 80 quarts of blueberries, and provided flowers for 2 weddings. It was a great season.

What's blooming now?

Saturday's market was full of flowers as many gardens are just starting to produce. This weeks vases included Asian lilies, blue and pink larkspur, coreopsis (single and double), sweet williams, daisies, astilbe, yarrow, mint and baby's breath. Lavender will be ready next week to add another scent to the jars.

All the corn is in and the beans will be finished this week just in time to start wheat harvest. Two days rest in between would be good. Ron has been leaving at 4-5:00a.m. and returning close to 10:00p.m. and eating dinner before bed.

The flower beds are receiving a weed preventative treatment. First weeds are pulled, newspaper is layed down in bare spots, paper is sprinkled with water, mulch is added, and sprinkled again. Hope this works. It does seem to work well in the garden between rows. Straw replaces mulch in the garden.
